Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin announces a tax rebate for taxpayers as a result of strong fiscal management and to return the money to the taxpayersโ pockets. If you are a Virginia taxpayer, you can learn everything about the rebate here.
The governor announced the tax rebate for 2025 for taxpayers who have filed their 2024 tax return or will file it by 03 November 2025. The Virginia Department of Taxation has begun rebate distribution from 15 October 2025 for taxpayers who have filed taxes by 01 July 2025.
Virginia residents with tax liability can expect a rebate of up to $400 from the government. Taxpayers can receive the rebate as soon as the distribution has begun, so if you have filed the tax return already, you do not need to do anything.ย
What will be the VA Tax Rebate 2025?
Virginia Governor announced the tax rebate on 24 September 2025 and stated that eligible taxpayers will receive the following tax rebate:
- Individuals: $200
- Married filing tax return jointly: $400.ย
The state determined the tax rebate based on the $10 billion surplus revenue that enabled the tax relief of $9 billion. Virginiaโs business investment commitments of $140 billion the growth has made it possible to process the rebate.
The $10 billion surplus revenue is the result of strong fiscal management in the past four years, and now the government is sharing the profit with the taxpayers and returning it back to the pockets of residents.
What makes you eligible for the VA Tax rebate 2025?
Not all taxpayers will be eligible for the VA tax rebates for 2025. Hence, if you are wondering, you will receive the rebate or not, you should check the eligibility for the rebate below:
- You must file the 2024 tax year return and have the tax liability.ย
- Tax liability here means the tax you owe after deducting the credits, deductions, and others, so if your tax bill comes to zero after applying credits or deductions, you will not receive the rebate.ย
- You will also qualify for the rebate even if you still havenโt filed the tax return, as the tax extension deadline for Virginia is 03 November 2025 due to the disaster-area affected tax extension.ย
If you are still not sure about your eligibility for the Virginia tax rebate, you can use the rebate lookup tool on the official Virginia Department of Taxation website.
When can you expect your VA Tax rebate 2025?
Virginia taxpayers who qualify for the 2025 tax rebate can expect their payout dates based on when they filed and the tax refund payment method. Those who chose direct deposit and filed their taxes by July 1, 2025, can expect an early payment.
The department will begin sending rebates to those who filed by July 1, 2025, starting from October 15, 2025. You can expect your rebate by the end of October 2025. If you received your tax refund via direct deposit, the rebate will be sent using the same method. If you received a paper check, it will be mailed to your recorded address.
If you file your tax return by November 3, 2025, you can expect to receive the rebate later in December 2025, depending on your tax liability and filing status. However, if your mailing address or bank account information has changed, remember you cannot update the information or change the payment method, hence you will receive the check by mail only.
What happens if you owe money to the states?
If the taxpayer receiving the tax rebate 2025 owes money to government agencies and institutions, then they can expect their tax rebate to be reduced or phased out. The agency will be using your tax rebate to cover the debt, and if the debt is more than the rebate, you will get a letter.
The department will send you a notice or reminder before using your tax rebate for clearing the debt, so that if such a thing happens, you will be informed by the department.
The Virginia taxation department has begun the 2025 tax rebate distribution from 15 October 2025 for taxpayers who have already filed the tax returns for the 2024 tax year and meet the conditions, so be ready to check your bank account or mail.
